ERC Clinical Training 2023

Couples Therapy and the Art of Self-Expansion for Essential Therapy Training

Presented by Lisa Pisha, MS, LMFT, CDWF and hosted by ERC: Counselors & Consultants

This engaging six-hour training is for professionals working in or wanting to work in the couples therapy realm. While every couple is a unique “we”, a relationship is built by two people bringing together their ultimate sense of “I”.

Self-expansion and the process of discovering and cultivating an individual’s unique sense of self can be a difficult balance to strike when working with couples. Determining how much
attention should be paid to each individual’s self-interest, experience, family of origin influences, etc., all while trying to cultivate connection and intimacy with partners, is a delicate dance. This training will help you identify areas and places to lead the couple to and through as they begin to gain greater clarity, connection, and identification of their own sense of self while strengthening their relationship.

Learning Outcomes / Objectives

  1. Understand the importance of self-expansion and autonomy within the context of a romantic relationship.
  2. Help partners identify personal narratives around their sense of self along with the narratives they hold of their partner.
  3. Facilitate the cultivation of emotional sharing and vulnerability within the couple.
  4. Guide couples in supporting one another’s individual goals of self-expansion within their relationships.
  5. Identify and use creative practices to help couples build new, co-created, shared meaning with one another.
